Letting someone into your home for the first time is a bigger deal than the price. Most people are not really worried about the cleaning — they are wondering whether this is going to be awkward. Here is exactly how it goes.
Before the visit
Do not clean first
Everybody does it, and it is not necessary. What genuinely helps is picking up — clothes off the floor, dishes out of the sink, toys and papers off surfaces. Every minute we spend moving your belongings is a minute not spent cleaning. Tidy is helpful; clean is not.
Tell us what matters most
Every house has a thing. Maybe it is the shower, or the kitchen floor, or you simply cannot stand fingerprints on the glass. Say so on the first visit. We would much rather know than guess.
Point out anything delicate
Antiques, a finish that reacts badly, a piece with sentimental value, a wobbly shelf. Show us on day one and we will work around it.
Being home — or not
Both are fine. Most clients are out; they arrange access and come home to a finished house. Some prefer to be there the first time and step out afterwards. There is no wrong answer, and we do not need you hovering to do good work.
If you will not be home, we agree on access before the day — a key, a code, a lockbox. Whatever you are comfortable with.
Pets
Tell us about them ahead of time: how many, whether they are friendly, and whether they should be shut in a room. We are used to animals and we like them. What we need is to not be surprised by a dog behind a door, and to know if one of them will bolt for an open door.
How long it takes
The first visit takes longer than the ones after it, usually noticeably. We are catching the house up and learning it at the same time — where things go, which surfaces need what, how you like things left. By the second or third visit it settles into a rhythm.
Afterwards
Walk through and look. If something is not right, say so — that day, not three visits later. A good cleaner wants the correction; it is how the service gets tuned to your house. Nobody is offended by "could you get the sills next time."
Questions worth asking any cleaner
- Are you insured? Ask for proof. If a cleaner is injured in your home or damages something, uninsured means it lands on you.
- Will it be the same person each time? Consistency is most of the quality in this work.
- What is not included? Clearer and more useful than asking what is.
- Do you bring supplies? And can you use mine if I prefer — fragrance-free, pet-safe, a specific floor product?
- What happens if I am not happy? The answer tells you a lot.
